Official visit of His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodore II to the Ecumenical Patriarchate


As it has already been announced, on Saturday morning, 4th December 2004, His Beatitude, the new Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, Theodore II, arrived in the City by plane. His Beatitude was accompanied by their Eminences, Metropolitans of Aksum Petros, Jonah of Kampala, Sergios of the cape of Good Hope and Nicholas of Ermoupolis, the Very Rev. Archimandrite Gennadios Stantzios Chief Secretary of the Synod, the Honourable Mr. Spyridon Kamalaki, Archon of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, and by Mr. Charalambos Katsimbris, President of the Hellenic Community of Alexandria. This is the first official peaceful visit of His Beatitude, as the Primate of the ancient Patriarchate of the Great City of Alexandria, after His enthronement, to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and to His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew which will last from the 4th to the 9th December.

In the VIP room of the airport, His Beatitude and His delegation were welcomed on behalf of His All Holiness, the Patriarch, by Their Eminences Metropolitans Constantine of Derkon, and Theoliptos of Iconium, Acting Chancellor of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Very Rev. Great Archimandrite Athenagoras. The Delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate then accompanied His Beatitude and His entourage to the Conrad Hotel, where they will be staying for the duration of their visit.

At approximately 12 noon, His Beatitude officiated in a Doxology that took place in the Most Venerable Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George. He was then brought to the Hall of the Throne, where he was officially welcomed with much joy by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who was surrounded by members of the respected Hierarchy of the Throne. The two Primates exchanged welcome speeches.

In the evening, an official welcome dinner was given in the Patriarchate in honour of the official visit of His Beatitude and the Greek Community in the City, on the occasion of the Feast Day of the Throne of the Mother Church. Among the guests were Archons Office-bearers of the Holy and Great Church of Christ, Scientists, Academicians, Businessmen, Members of the Community and other guests invited by His All Holiness and the Holy and Sacred Synod. During the reception, His All Holiness, His Beatitude, and the Honourable Mr. Savvas Tsitouridis, late Minister- Member of the Parliament said a few words.
